As the earth marks her transition from summer into fall, many of my clients are feeling a need to cleanse their bodies. Each change of seasons is a perfect opportunity to clean and prepare our bodies for the next phase, and doing so is, I believe, a practice that supports longevity. Kitchari (literally "mish-mash" in Hindi) is a soupy Ayurvedic stew or congee of mung beans and rice cooked with spices that is used in seasonal cleansing. I've adapted the recipe for vegan use, substituted brown basmati for white, and present the option of using red lentils as a substitute for mung beans. This simple dish, along with a few steamed vegetables and green smoothies or juices, can make the basis for a lovely and gentle healing cleanse.
