In the fall the questions from clients about cold and flu symptoms increase exponentially. One of the first lines of defense when you get this kind of bug is rest. Secondly, drown your system with fluids. Water, Vitamin C (food source, dissolved in tea or water), fresh squeezed pomegranate juice (YUM!), ginger tea, miso soup, and fresh veggie juices all help. Herbal tinctures are part of my arsenal as well, especially Chinese tonic formulas, and then there is food-as-medicine. Cabbage, cauliflower, onions, leeks, daikon, ginger and garlic, are all foods that help our lungs. These can become soup, the most healing, mothering food of all. One day have thyme-scented Vegan French Onion Soup; the next, a pot of Curried Cauliflower Soup redolent of ginger, garlic, and cilantro. Cups of Cold and Flu Season Soup go down like tea, and will help purge viruses out of your system.
