Hoppin' John is a Southern dish of black-eyed peas and rice that is traditionally served on New Year's day, but it is so delicious it seems a shame to relegate it to special occasions. Newfangled Hoppin' John is an updated version of this dish, with the option of using turkey or tempeh bacon and thus please both vegans and carnivores. With green vegetables and a salad, this dish makes an excellent simple supper.
