Recommended Restaurants: New York City

By , About.com Guide

Check back often, as these recommended restaurant listings will be updated and expanded regularly. I’m including establishments that have macro-friendly options on their menus.

Angelica’s Kitchen 300 E. 12th Street
 212-228-2909
Angelica’s is a clean, mainly organic, vegan restaurant with a large selection of excellent, healthy dishes and good service. Angelica’s has been in the East Village for about 30 years, and it is rated as one of the top ten vegetarian restaurants in the country. Be prepared to wait if you go during busy hours.

Souen Macrobiotic 210 Sixth Ave Tel: 212-807-7421 28 East 13th Street Tel: 212-627-7150.
The atmosphere and service at the 6th Ave location is better, and it’s a cleaner location. Souen has been a busy New York institution since the 1970’s. The food is not as thoughtfully prepared as at Angelica’s, but it is a good and reasonably reliable place to eat.

Candle Café 1307 3rd Avenue
New York, NY
212-472-0970
Candle Café serves international vegetarian cuisine. I have had uneven experiences there, but overall it has good marks: good food, a detailed menu, relaxed atmosphere, and a good location on the Upper East Side

Candle 79 154 East 79th Street 212-537-7179
Candle 79 is more atmospheric and expensive than Candle Café. It is a dining experience rather than being a café atmosphere, and is a good place for a vegan date. Wine and beer are served.

Hangawi 12 East 32nd Street 212-213-0077
Hangawi is a vegan Korean restaurant that gets regular awards for being one of the best restaurants in New York. It has a peaceful, Zen atmosphere, exceptional service, and thoughtfully prepared flavorful food.

Strictly Roots 2058 Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard
212-864-8699
Strictly Roots serves vegan West Indian Ital (Jamaican macrobiotic) food at very reasonable prices. They have good veggie burgers and non-dairy desserts.

Urban Spring 185 Dekalb Ave, Brooklyn 718-237-0797
Urban Spring serves salads, sandwiches, juices and treats with a macrobiotic sensibility. A local favorite.
